Move within comfort

Gentle Range-of-Motion Guide

Simple, commonly recommended mobility drills for every region on our body map. Pick a joint, learn three easy movements, print the sheet. These keep joints moving while a problem settles; they are general education, not a prescribed rehabilitation program.

Neck: three gentle drills

Once or twice a day is plenty to start. Smooth and slow beats many and fast.

  1. Slow head turns

Sitting tall, slowly turn your head toward one shoulder as far as comfortable, hold two breaths, return, repeat to the other side, five times each way.

  2. Chin tucks

Sitting tall, glide your chin straight back (making a gentle double chin) without tipping the head, hold three seconds, release, ten times.

A small movement done well beats a big movement done fast.

  3. Ear to shoulder

Let one ear drift toward the same shoulder until you feel a gentle stretch on the other side, hold two breaths, five times each side.

Building confidence over two to three weeks? That is the moment to add strength work, and a physiotherapist can turn these starters into a real program for your goals.

Keep going

Why movement, not rest?

Two generations ago the advice for almost every sore joint was rest. The evidence has moved on decisively: cartilage is nourished by movement, tendons adapt to load, and stiffness feeds pain. From osteoarthritis guidance to back pain guidelines, the modern first-line prescription is the same: keep moving within comfort, and build up gradually.

The drills on this page are the gentlest end of that spectrum: enough to keep a joint's range alive while a problem settles, and a confidence bridge back toward normal activity. What they are not is a treatment plan; if pain is limiting your life, that plan deserves a professional who has actually assessed you.
