Joint Pain Explorer
Pick the joint that is bothering you, on the body map or from the list, and get the patterns doctors commonly see there, sensible self-care while you wait, and the red flags that mean stop waiting. This explorer teaches; it cannot examine you, so it never tells you what YOUR pain is.
Choose a joint on the map or from the list to see what doctors commonly find there, what helps, and what should send you in urgently.
No joint was selected, so this printable guide shows the ankle and foot entry.
Ankle and foot
Ankles and feet absorb every step. Sprains and overload tendon problems dominate here, and rehabilitation quality, not rest quantity, decides how well they recover.
Patterns doctors commonly see
Ankle sprain
The rolled ankle: outer ligaments overstretched. Early movement and balance retraining prevent the "weak ankle" cycle.
Achilles tendinopathy
Morning stiffness and pain above the heel after a jump in running or walking load.
Plantar heel pain (plantar fasciitis)
First-steps-of-the-morning heel pain; stubborn but usually self-limiting with calf work.
Big-toe osteoarthritis or gout
A stiff painful big toe; a sudden hot swollen one, often at night, suggests gout and deserves a doctor.
Patterns, not diagnoses: several of these can feel identical from the inside.
Sensible self-care while it settles
- After a simple sprain: protect briefly, then progressively move, strengthen and balance-train
- Calf raises are the core drill for Achilles and heel problems; build up gradually
- Footwear check: worn-out or suddenly-flatter shoes precede many flare-ups
Book an appointment promptly if...
- A sprain still swollen and unstable after two to three weeks
- Heel or Achilles pain that keeps you from normal walking for more than a few weeks
